Linking paragraphs smoothly
Linking paragraphs smoothlyFree4:22Heddy Score 3 of 7, below the standard
What you need to know
- Transitions show readers how one idea links to the next and stop writing from feeling choppy.
- Different linking words do different jobs: adding, cause and effect, contrast, comparison, giving examples, clarifying and sequencing.
- Pointing words such as 'this' and 'these' can link back to an earlier idea, as long as it is clear what they refer to.
- Repeating a key idea from the previous paragraph in new words helps the reader see the connection.
