Analysing a Shakespeare sceneFree3:01Heddy Score 3 of 7, below the standard
What you need to know
- Act 1 Scene 1 of Hamlet opens with guards on night watch at Elsinore, who have seen a ghost resembling the dead King Hamlet.
- Horatio begins sceptical, then fears the ghost is a bad omen for Denmark.
- The scene gives the audience backstory: the old king's death, tension with Norway and young Fortinbras's wish for revenge.
- Fortinbras, a man of action, is set up as a foil to the thoughtful Prince Hamlet, introducing the theme of thought versus action.
