How writers build character
How writers build characterFree6:27Heddy Score 3 of 7, below the standard
What you need to know
- A character's want is an outer goal that drives the plot; their need is an inner lesson they must learn.
- Obstacles to the want come from outside, while obstacles to the need come from the character's own flaws.
- Characters usually know what they want but are unaware of, or reject, what they need.
- Wants are unique to each story, but needs are universal, which is why readers connect with them.
- Strong stories link want and need so that the plot and the theme support each other.
