Electrons explain the table
Electrons explain the tableFree4:23Heddy Score 3 of 7, below the standard
What you need to know
- Electrons sit in shells (energy levels) around the nucleus and fill the lowest available shell first.
- For the first 20 elements the first shell holds up to 2 electrons and the second and third hold up to 8 each.
- The atomic number gives the number of electrons in a neutral atom, so lithium is drawn as 2,1 and carbon as 2,4.
- Electron arrangements can be drawn as dot-and-cross shell diagrams or written in shorthand such as 2,8,8,2 for calcium.
