What you need to know

  • By composition the Earth has three main layers: a thin rocky crust, the mantle and the core.
  • Oceanic crust is thin and made of dense basalt, while continental crust is thicker and rich in less dense granite.
  • The mantle is hot solid rock that can flow very slowly; the core is mostly iron and nickel, with a liquid outer core and a solid inner core.
  • The crust and upper mantle form the rigid lithosphere, which is broken into tectonic plates that move on the asthenosphere.
