What you need to know

  • In a two-element compound the metal (or more metallic element) comes first and the second element's name changes to end in -ide, e.g. calcium chloride, carbon dioxide.
  • Ionic compounds (metal + non-metal) are named without number prefixes.
  • Compounds of two non-metals use prefixes such as mono-, di- and tri- to show how many atoms there are, e.g. dinitrogen monoxide.
  • The prefix mono- is never used for the first element: CO2 is carbon dioxide.
