What you need to know

  • Flowering plants produce flowers for reproduction, and their fruits develop from the flower's ovary.
  • The stamen (anther and filament) makes pollen; the carpel is made of the stigma, style and ovary.
  • Pollination is the transfer of pollen to a stigma, often by insects such as bees attracted by nectar and petals.
  • A pollen tube grows down the style to an ovule, carrying the male nucleus that fertilises the egg cell.
  • Each fertilised ovule becomes a seed, the ovary ripens into a fruit, and the seeds are dispersed by animals or wind.
