What you need to know
- Vitamins and minerals are needed only in small amounts, but the body cannot stay healthy without them.
- Vitamin C from citrus fruit and vegetables prevents scurvy.
- Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium; too little calcium or vitamin D can lead to rickets, where bones become deformed.
- Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, and a lack of iron causes anaemia, so the blood carries less oxygen.
