Enzymes in digestion
Enzymes in digestionFree4:01Heddy Score 3 of 7, below the standard
What you need to know
- Large food molecules (carbohydrates, proteins and lipids) are too big to pass into the blood, so they must be broken down into small ones.
- Carbohydrases such as amylase break starch into sugars; amylase is made in the salivary glands and the pancreas.
- Proteases break proteins into amino acids: pepsin works in the acidic stomach and a different protease works in the small intestine.
- Lipases break lipids into fatty acids and glycerol, helped by bile emulsifying fats into small droplets with a larger surface area.
