What you need to know

  • Joints are where bones meet, and their shape decides which movements are possible.
  • A hinge joint, such as the elbow, bends and straightens in one direction only.
  • Ball-and-socket joints at the hip and shoulder allow movement in every direction; the shallower shoulder socket moves more freely but is less stable.
  • A pivot joint in the forearm lets one bone rotate around another, which is how the forearm twists.
