What you need to know

  • Plants make their own sugars by photosynthesis, but they still need mineral ions from the soil to make other substances.
  • Nitrate ions supply the nitrogen needed to make proteins; without them plants are stunted and older leaves turn yellow.
  • Magnesium is needed to make chlorophyll, so a plant lacking it turns yellow and photosynthesises less.
  • Farmers add fertilisers containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK), or manure, to keep yields high.
